What’s the best tequila for Margaritas?

For most Margaritas, start with a good 100% agave blanco tequila. Blanco keeps the fresh agave character front and center, with citrus, pepper, herbal, and mineral notes that pair naturally with fresh lime.

But the best bottle also depends on the Margarita you’re making.

A bright classic Margarita, spicy Margarita, frozen Margarita, and premium agave-forward Margarita don’t necessarily need the same tequila.

Here are five bottles worth trying, including some of our favorites available from Holiday Wine Cellar.

1. LALO Blanco Tequila – Best Overall for Margaritas

If you’re looking for one bottle to start with, LALO Blanco Tequila is an excellent Margarita choice.

LALO keeps things focused on the agave rather than barrel aging, making it particularly well suited to a fresh Margarita.

That’s important because a Margarita doesn’t need tequila that disappears behind the lime and orange liqueur. You want enough agave character to still taste the tequila after everything comes together.

Use LALO in a straightforward Margarita with fresh lime, orange liqueur, and ice before experimenting with additional flavors.

Best for: Classic Margaritas
Style: Blanco
Why it works: Fresh, agave-forward character works naturally with lime.

2. Tequila Ocho Plata – Best Premium Margarita Tequila

If you want the tequila itself to become a bigger part of the drink, Tequila Ocho is worth exploring.

Ocho is particularly interesting because of its focus on agave and terroir. Rather than treating tequila as simply another ingredient, Ocho gives you an opportunity to taste more of the character behind the spirit.

That’s also why we wouldn’t bury this one under a dozen Margarita ingredients.

Keep it simple.

Tequila Ocho Plata, fresh lime juice, quality orange liqueur, ice, and an optional salt rim.

Best for: Premium and agave-forward Margaritas
Style: Plata/Blanco
Why it works: Distinctive agave character can remain noticeable even after adding citrus.

3. Don Julio Blanco – Best Familiar Choice

Want something familiar that’s easy to use?

Don Julio Blanco is a versatile choice for a traditional Margarita.

A clean blanco profile allows the lime and orange flavors to remain bright while still providing the agave backbone the cocktail needs.

It’s also a useful bottle if you’re making Margaritas for a group because you aren’t committing everyone to an unusual flavor profile.

Best for: Traditional Margaritas and entertaining
Style: Blanco
Why it works: Clean, approachable agave character that works well with fresh citrus.

4. Patrón Silver – Best for Fruit Margaritas

If strawberry, mango, watermelon, or another fruit is going into the shaker, Patrón Silver Tequila is an easy bottle to work with.

Fruit introduces additional sweetness and flavor, so you don’t necessarily need an extremely complex tequila.

Patrón Silver’s lighter profile makes it versatile enough for a classic Margarita while giving you room to experiment with different fruits and flavors.

Best for: Strawberry, mango and other fruit Margaritas
Style: Silver/Blanco
Why it works: Approachable enough to mix with additional flavors without making the cocktail overly complicated.

5. San Matias Tahona Blanco – Best for a More Complex Margarita

For something a little different, try San Matias Tahona Blanco Tequila.

Its flavor profile includes citrus, cooked agave, mineral notes, citrus blossom, and pepper.

Those flavors make sense in a Margarita.

The citrus can complement the lime while the agave, mineral, and pepper notes provide additional depth underneath it.

Start with a classic Margarita so you can actually taste what the tequila brings to the drink.

Best for: Tequila enthusiasts
Style: Blanco
Why it works: Citrus, mineral, agave, and pepper flavors can add another layer to a simple Margarita.

Blanco vs. Reposado: Which Tequila Is Better for Margaritas?

For the classic version, we’d start with blanco tequila.

Blanco is generally unaged or only briefly rested, which helps preserve the fresh character of the agave.

That makes it a natural match for lime.

Reposado tequila spends time aging in oak, introducing flavors that can include vanilla, caramel, baking spice, and oak.

Neither choice is wrong.

It comes down to the Margarita you want.

Choose blanco if you want something bright, crisp, citrusy, and refreshing.

Choose reposado if you want something smoother, rounder, richer, and a little more complex.

Añejo tequila can also be used, but the additional barrel character starts moving the cocktail farther away from the bright, fresh profile most people associate with a classic Margarita.

Does Expensive Tequila Make a Better Margarita?

Not necessarily.

Quality matters because a Margarita only contains a few major ingredients.

Price is a different question.

Once you combine tequila with lime, orange liqueur, ice, sweetener, salt, and potentially fruit or chile, some of the subtle characteristics of an expensive sipping tequila can disappear.

For an everyday Margarita, we’d rather use a flavorful 100% agave tequila and fresh lime juice than pour an ultra-premium bottle into a cocktail made with bottled lime mix.

Save the rare bottle for sipping.

Don’t Forget the Orange Liqueur

Tequila gets most of the attention, but there’s another important bottle in a classic Margarita: orange liqueur.

The traditional tequila-lime-orange combination is what gives the Margarita its recognizable balance of citrus, sweetness, and agave.

One option is Patrón Citrónge Orange Liqueur.

Try it with one of the blanco tequilas above rather than relying on a premade Margarita mix.

Fresh lime plus a good orange liqueur gives you much more control over the final drink.

What Tequila Is Best for Spicy Margaritas?

Blanco is our first choice here, too.

Jalapeño, serrano, chile, and other spicy ingredients already bring a strong flavor to the drink.

A fresh blanco tequila provides the agave backbone without introducing too much barrel character.

Start with less heat than you think you need.

You can always add another jalapeño slice, but it’s considerably harder to take the heat back out.

What Tequila Is Best for Frozen Margaritas?

Frozen Margaritas introduce another challenge: dilution.

Between the ice, lime, sweetener, and any fruit you’re adding, delicate tequila flavors can disappear quickly.

Choose a blanco with noticeable agave character.

You don’t need the most expensive bottle on the shelf, but you also don’t want a tequila that completely disappears once it hits the blender.

And save that rare sipping tequila for another night.

Easy Classic Margarita Recipe

A good Margarita doesn’t need a bottled mix or a dozen ingredients.

Ingredients

  • 2 oz blanco tequila
  • 1 oz fresh lime juice
  • ¾ oz orange liqueur
  • Ice
  • Salt for the rim, optional
  • Fresh lime wedge

How to Make It

Add the tequila, fresh lime juice, and orange liqueur to a cocktail shaker filled with ice.

Shake until well chilled.

Strain over fresh ice into a rocks glass with an optional salted rim.

Garnish with a fresh lime wedge.

Taste it.

If it’s too tart for you, add a small amount of agave syrup. If it’s too sweet, add a little more fresh lime.

That’s one advantage of making Margaritas from scratch: you control the balance.

So, What’s the Best Tequila for Margaritas?

For most people, the answer is straightforward:

Start with a quality 100% agave blanco tequila.

For a classic Margarita, try LALO Blanco.

If you want the agave itself to play a bigger role, try Tequila Ocho Plata.

For a familiar crowd-pleaser, Don Julio Blanco is an easy choice.

Making fruit Margaritas? Patrón Silver gives you plenty of room to experiment.

And if you’re interested in a more complex tequila-forward Margarita, give San Matias Tahona Blanco a try.

There isn’t one bottle that’s perfect for everyone.

That’s part of what makes Margaritas fun.

Change the tequila. Change the orange liqueur. Adjust the lime. Try it spicy. Try it frozen.

Then decide which version belongs in your glass.
